Michael Diaz, Product Owner & Senior Engineer at BeSmartee, oversees development of our various mortgage technology platforms by strategically managing the product backlog. By communicating with stakeholders and motivating the Scrum development teams, throughout the Agile process, Michael has been able to lead his teams to successfully reach company sprint goals and exceed client expectations.
Q: Can you describe your role, day-to-day responsibilities, and one of your favorite projects at BeSmartee?
A: I am a senior developer, product owner and software architect. I assist our implementation teams in creating solutions to quickly onboard clients and partner vendors as well as create lasting software assets to help our company scale. My favorite project has been working with the generation of electronic initial disclosures and mechanisms for allowing them to be e-signed.
Q: How has BeSmartee helped you in your career development and what are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?
A: BeSmartee has helped me grow in many ways. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to communicate with clients and partner vendors. Behind any software system is an amazing group of people – being able to communicate effectively is very valuable in our field.
Secondly, knowing the most important thing to do, at any given moment, is a skill we emphasize in our fast-paced, dynamic ecosystem.
Lastly, the company culture fosters the drive to solve seemingly insurmountable problems. We are empowered with tapping into our brain trust to create lasting solutions for technical challenges that are prevalent in our industry.
Q: What’s the most unusual/interesting job you’ve ever had?
A: I once had a job performing bank server upgrades and cabling banking networks. It was a dirty job but I got to meet so many interesting people up and down the West Coast.

A: I play guitar and actively listen to music. I love electronic music and the software tools that enable its creation.
Q: What’s on your bucket list?
A: Travel across Europe with my family, visit Machu Picchu, perform a few stand-up comedy acts, skydive, perform my music to a substantial crowd, and attend Burning Man.
Q: You’re happiest when?
A: I’m with my family – guitar in hand.
